Recognition for Digital Subsidy Rollout

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a national honour for Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja to recognise her work in designing and executing the federal government’s digital petrol subsidy programme.

The honour is scheduled to be formally presented on Pakistan Day, March 23, according to reports. The decision was made public during a high-level review meeting held in Islamabad, where the prime minister evaluated the performance and operational status of the fuel relief initiative.

Acknowledging Federal and Provincial Teams

During the review session, the prime minister commended the collaborative efforts demonstrated by both federal and provincial administrations in executing the digital welfare system. Beyond the national honour designated for Khawaja, Prime Minister Sharif also announced commemorative shields for the officials and technical teams tasked with operating the programme across the country.

He noted the key contributions made by various ministers and administrative officers who coordinated to establish the distribution workflow, affirming that the relief programme will remain operational to assist qualifying citizens.

Framework and Reach of the Fuel Relief Scheme

The relief initiative was introduced by the federal government to mitigate the economic strain caused by escalating fuel rates. It directly targets low-income transport users, extending financial concessions to eligible riders of motorcycles, rickshaw drivers, and motorists operating vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc.

Under the operational mechanism of the initiative, eligible beneficiaries receive digital tokens that allow them to purchase petrol at reduced retail rates at participating fuel stations.

Scale and Financial Outlay

Data disclosed by the prime minister on October 9 indicated that the programme has catered to significant demand nationwide, with more than 10 million individuals benefiting from the targeted fuel price reductions.

To support the rollout and ensure uninterrupted distribution, the federal government set aside an allocation of Rs75 billion. The scheme relies heavily on technological infrastructure and inter-governmental coordination between federal ministries and provincial bodies to identify, authenticate, and provide subsidies directly to eligible motorists.
