The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has instituted a formal mechanism aimed at integrating revenues generated through digital and social media platforms into Pakistan’s established taxation system.
Taxation Across Major Platforms
Under the newly established framework, digital content creators, online influencers, and media personalities earning income through digital channels will be liable to pay income tax under existing statutory tax laws.
The measure specifically encompasses earnings derived from several leading social media platforms operating in the country, including:
- YouTube
- TikTok
Expanding the Digital Tax Base
The step comes as digital monetization continues to grow, with online engagement and advertising revenues representing an expanding segment of economic activity. By formalizing tax compliance for digital media production, revenue authorities are aiming to address non-traditional revenue streams that previously operated largely outside formal reporting structures.
Content creators earning via creator funds, platform monetization, digital advertising, or sponsored content across these designated platforms will now fall under the scrutiny of the national income tax framework, adhering to standard regulatory guidelines for income declaration.
