The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has introduced a dedicated mechanism aimed at integrating earnings generated through digital and social media channels into Pakistan’s formal taxation system.
Taxing the Creator Economy
Under the newly established framework, digital content creators and social media influencers who generate revenue through global online platforms will be required to account for their income under prevailing tax statutes.
The policy applies directly to monetization and revenue streams originating across major platforms, including:
- YouTube
- TikTok
Bringing Digital Revenue Into the Formal Fold
The measure marks a concerted move by the country’s central tax authority to formalize the rapidly expanding digital creator sector. As digital content production and brand partnerships on social networks have grown, revenue earned in this space has increasingly drawn regulatory attention.
By bringing these earnings under standard income tax provisions, the tax authority aims to broaden the national tax base and ensure that income earned through domestic and cross-border digital activities is documented and taxed in accordance with existing legislation.
