COMSATS University Islamabad, Abbottabad Campus, has entered into a three-year Memorandum of Understanding with Above Zero (Private) Limited, establishing an academic and industry collaboration centered on the development of the Thandiani mountain destination in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The formal agreement was signed at the CUI Abbottabad Campus by the campus director, Dr. Zakir Hussain, and the chief executive officer of Above Zero, Abdullah Khan. The partnership is structured to integrate the university’s faculty and student body directly into the planning, research, and technical phases of the large-scale regional development project.

Scope of the Academic and Industry Linkage

Under the newly established framework, both institutions plan to facilitate student internships, collaborative research undertakings, capstone degree projects, and structured professional training. The areas of mutual engagement span several core disciplines, including civil engineering, environmental sciences, computer sciences, management sciences, green architecture, and regional heritage conservation.

According to COMSATS Abbottabad, the collaborative initiative is intended to bolster applied research capabilities, enhance professional capacity building, and advance regional sustainable development. Specific projects under the broader agreement will be finalized separately by both entities over the course of the three-year term.

The agreement also outlines plans to evaluate establishing a dedicated joint office at the CUI Abbottabad Campus. If set up, this office will serve as an administrative and operational base for coordinating student mentorship, internship placements, and future recruitment drives directly connected to the development.

Field Experience on Regional Ground

The collaboration offers students and researchers direct access to the Thandiani site while the destination remains in its master planning and preliminary phases. Thandiani is being developed as Pakistan’s first purpose-planned, four-season mountain destination, presenting diverse technical challenges across seasonal weather shifts, topography, and infrastructure demands.

Speaking on the collaboration, Above Zero Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Khan emphasized the deliberate choice to involve regional researchers before construction begins. He noted that the company wanted the mountain studied thoroughly prior to physical intervention, adding that COMSATS Abbottabad supplies the necessary scientific expertise, engineering capabilities, and local youth from Hazara to study the land while gaining on-site research exposure.

In addition to experiential field learning and capstones, the agreement encompasses professional skills development initiatives. These include industry-led guest lectures, technical competitions, and regional innovation challenges aimed at addressing engineering and environmental questions posed by high-altitude, year-round tourism infrastructure.

The Thandiani Destination Framework

Above Zero holds development rights to the 400-kanal project site under a 100-year public-private partnership signed with the Galiyat Development Authority of the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The development consortium brings together Tahir Builders (Pvt.) Ltd. alongside the creators of Qubed Hospitality.

The master plan for the four-season mountain project is being formulated by Ecosign Mountain Resort Planners, a Canadian design firm recognized globally for its resort master planning and design work on six Winter Olympic host venues.

Operating a year-round mountain settlement requires sustained operational, scientific, and technological capacity, from environmental mitigation and water management to structural engineering and municipal administration. The partnership between COMSATS Abbottabad and Above Zero is intended to establish local pathways into these vocations, keeping academic talent and employment opportunities connected directly within the Hazara division.

According to the participating institutions, upcoming student training schedules, internship placements, and related project activities will be coordinated and publicized through the official institutional channels of both COMSATS Abbottabad and Above Zero.
