Applications have officially opened for the University of Tokyo MEXT Scholarship for the October 2027 intake. The initiative, provided under the auspices of Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), offers university-recommended funding for international candidates seeking to pursue postgraduate education in Japan.

Academic Scope and Degree Levels

The scholarship opportunity is available for both master’s and doctoral degree tracks. Across the University of Tokyo, academic offerings encompass 15 graduate schools, each consisting of varied individual departments. Prospective scholars are eligible to apply across these graduate schools for master’s and Ph.D. degrees.

The duration allocated for the master’s program is two years, while the doctoral program covers a study period of three years. Both programs are set to commence for students entering in the October 2027 academic intake.

Financial Coverage and Scholarship Benefits

The MEXT University Recommended Scholarship provides full financial backing to accepted students throughout their prescribed study timeline. Under the funding framework, beneficiaries are exempted from examination and tuition payments, as both enrollment fees and standard tuition costs are fully covered.

In addition to tuition coverage, selected master’s and Ph.D. scholars receive a regular monthly stipend to assist with living expenses during their stay in Japan. The scholarship provisions also cover the costs of round-trip airfare tickets between the student’s home country and Japan.

Eligibility and Language Requirements

The program maintains specific criteria regarding language credentials. An IELTS score is not mandatory for admission if an applicant’s previous university-level degree was taught in the English language.

University guidance emphasizes that the application review process for the Japanese government scholarship is competitive, requiring candidates to fulfill all institutional and departmental prerequisites to be considered for admission and recommendation.

Participating Departments and Submission Process

Specific academic divisions have confirmed participation in the recruitment round. The Graduate School of Science is receiving applications for the 2027 MEXT scholarship across its five core departments: Physics, Astronomy, Earth and Planetary Science, Chemistry, and Biological Sciences. The Department of Civil Engineering is likewise accepting applications for the intake.

Interested candidates must submit their application electronically through the designated online portal. All required supplementary documents must be uploaded through the portal prior to the deadline, which is set for October 30, 2026. Applicants are advised to review specific department websites for detailed submission guidelines associated with their chosen field of study.
