The University of Management and Technology (UMT) has officially announced the launch of its School of Artificial Intelligence (SAI), representing an institutional push toward expanding artificial intelligence education, research, and technological innovation across Pakistan.

The newly inaugurated school is grounded in the guiding philosophy of “Intelligence for a Better Tomorrow,” which emphasizes the principle that technological tools fulfill their highest purpose when directed toward improving human lives and social welfare.

Evolution from Department to Specialized School

The institutional foundation for SAI began taking shape in 2019, when UMT established its dedicated Department of Artificial Intelligence. Over subsequent years, as artificial intelligence expanded its footprint across global economies, industrial processes, and social structures, university leadership recognized the necessity of scaling the department into an autonomous, specialized academic school.

Rather than treating the subject purely as a theoretical or isolated computational discipline, SAI has been structured to integrate academic instruction with broad-based utility. The school aims to equip students, academic researchers, entrepreneurs, and industrial partners with the tools necessary to leverage artificial intelligence for domestic progress and societal enhancement.

Curriculum, Research, and Industry Integration

SAI is structured to integrate four core areas: higher education, applied research, commercial innovation, and collaborative industry engagement. This multi-pronged framework is intended to produce the specialized expertise required for an increasingly automated and data-centric workforce.

The school’s scope spans emerging algorithmic frameworks and foundational technical research, with a targeted emphasis on real-world implementations that address practical difficulties encountered by public institutions, private corporations, and local communities. Academic programs and strategic industry initiatives under SAI aim to cultivate technical specialists capable of both engineering intelligent software architectures and evaluating their governance, ethical dimensions, and social outcomes.

Leadership Outlines Institutional Mission

Speaking on the launch, UMT Chairman and President Ibrahim Hasan Murad stated that the establishment of the school directly responds to the rapid development and disruption occurring within the computing sector.

“This is a step to match the scale and pace at which AI is transforming our world,” Murad stated. “At UMT, we believe universities must not simply respond to technological change; they must help shape it. SAI brings together education, research and innovation to prepare a generation that can lead confidently in an AI-driven future while keeping human progress at its centre.”

Murad highlighted that the school relies on UMT’s ongoing investigative and academic track record, aiming to convert technical scholarship into operational interventions. “The school builds on a strong foundation of inquiry, discovery and innovation that has been cultivated at UMT over many years,” he noted. “Our ambition is not only to develop expertise in AI, but to create an environment where ideas can become solutions and research can translate into meaningful impact. By connecting AI with real human and societal needs, we hope to contribute to both national development and a better future for all.”
