Islamabad — August 26, 2026: Pakistan is mourning the deaths of at least 14 new-born babies following a devastating fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Wednesday. The incident has sparked grief and renewed questions about fire safety and emergency preparedness in major public hospitals.

Fire Breaks Out in Newborn Ward

The fire broke out in a neonatal facility at PIMS during the early hours of Wednesday. Reports said around 15 infants were present in the affected area at the time of the incident, with most requiring intensive medical support. At least 14 newborns lost their lives, while one infant was rescued.

Emergency teams responded to the incident and the fire was brought under control. Surviving patients were moved to other facilities within the hospital as authorities worked to secure the affected area.

Investigation Ordered

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident and called for those responsible for any negligence to be held accountable. President Asif Ali Zardari also expressed condolences to the families who lost their children.

Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the fire, including the condition of the ward, emergency response arrangements and fire-safety systems.

Initial reports have pointed to an electrical or air-conditioning-related problem as a possible factor, but the precise cause remains subject to investigation. Reports have also raised questions about access to the ward and the availability of adequate emergency facilities during the fire.

Families Demand Answers

The tragedy has left families devastated, with grieving parents demanding answers about how such a disaster could occur inside one of Islamabad’s major public hospitals.

The incident has also intensified public discussion about safety standards in healthcare facilities. Hospitals caring for newborns and critically ill patients require effective fire alarms, emergency exits, evacuation plans and trained response teams because many patients cannot be moved without assistance.

A National Moment of Grief

The loss of so many newborn lives has sent shockwaves across Pakistan. PIMS is one of the country’s major government hospitals, making the incident particularly significant for the national healthcare system.

As the investigation continues, attention will now focus on determining the exact cause of the fire, assessing whether safety procedures were properly followed and ensuring that similar tragedies are prevented in the future.

For the families affected, however, the investigation cannot undo the heartbreaking loss. Their demand is simple: accountability, transparency and meaningful improvements to hospital safety so that other parents do not experience the same tragedy.

Digital Pakistan Today will continue to follow the investigation and provide verified updates as authorities release further information.
